ANNUAL AUBURN-ALABAMA “FOOD FIGHT”

Runs October 4th – November 21st

For the past thirty years, Auburn University and the University of Alabama have competed against each other to see which school could raise the most food for their local food bank in the weeks prior to the big competition on the football field. This is the biggest food drive of the year and last year an amazing total of 686,807 pounds was donated locally. This food drive has a huge impact on the Food Bank’s ability to provide food for families in need this holiday season and beyond.

The total pounds collected by both schools during this friendly competition since the drive began is the equivalent of more than 8.7 million meals or 417 tractor-trailer loads!

Each year, as we are well in the throes of football, tailgates and team spirit, there is a group of fine people at Auburn University and the Food Bank of East Alabama working diligently to make sure our neighbors do not go hungry. No matter which team you pull for in the Iron Bowl, this is a great way for neighbors to help neighbors in a fun, competitive way.

I know that we have folks here in Opelika and Auburn with big hearts. You probably speak with someone who struggles with hunger daily and don’t even know it. It could be a church member, a co-worker or even a friend. Do your part! Come out and show your love for your community. Join the Food Drive and help tackle hunger.

Fall is back and football isn’t the only competition. The Beat Bama food drive is underway as we once again compete with Tuscaloosa. The stakes are high as both communities compete to help as many people as they possibly can. I encourage everyone in East Alabama to give what they can to help beat food insecurity, and Beat Bama, this fall.

I think the biggest thing we can learn from this is the difference that one community can make.
