The Community Market

The Community Market, launched in January of 2003, functions as an extension of the Food Bank of East Alabama.

The Community Market distributes food in a friendly, grocery store environment for Lee County families in need. The Community Market is a client-choice food pantry that allows people to select the food that best fits their needs.

MISSION STATEMENT:

The Community Market of the Food Bank of East Alabama increases access to healthy food for all people that are in need and serves in ways that cultivate dignity, self-sufficiency, empowerment and provide for a strong community.

HOW IT WORKS

1) Call 334-749-8844 beginning Tuesdays at 10:00 am to make appointments for Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday of the same week. Appointments are also available on the First and Second Saturdays of the month.

2) During the initial call, a staff member or volunteer will conduct an intake interview and information validation. Please have the following information available when calling:

  • Amount of income for each household member
  • Names and dates of birth for each household member

3) Once eligibility validation is complete, an appointment will be scheduled. Appointment times are Wednesday from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm, Thursday and Friday from 9:00 am to 11:30 am and First and Second Saturdays from 8:30 am to 11:30 am.

4) Household representatives must present a photo ID and proof of Lee County Residency (utility bill) upon arriving for your first scheduled appointment. Please have these items readily available in an effort to avoid delays.

BROWN BAG

The Community Market also offers the Brown Bag program which provides monthly supplementary groceries for Lee County seniors sixty and older with limited income. Seniors complete an application form in order to enroll in the program. Food Distribution is offered Monday and Tuesday from 8:30 am-10:30 am, except for the fifth Monday and Tuesdays of the month and Holidays. Contact Food Bank at 334-821-9006 for more information or to request an application to be mailed.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteers are the bedrock of the Community Market and they play a very important role in helping to maintain an atmosphere of dignity and compassion. They assist people in need in a concrete, caring way. Volunteers are given instructions and are placed according to interest and need.

For more information or to volunteer, contact the Community Market at 334-749-8844 or cduff@foodbankofeastalabama.com.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS

The outreach of the Community Market is made possible through community support. Overhead expenses are covered by support from local governments and organizations, and financial contributions from individuals, churches and civic clubs are transformed into food for hungry people. Donations are tax-deductible and can be mailed to 355 Industry Drive, Auburn, AL 36832.
