The mission of the Backpack Program is to meet the needs of chronically hungry children by providing them with nutritious and easy-to-prepare food to take home on weekends and school vacations when other resources are not available. Students are referred to the program by teachers and counselors. (Quarterly Newsletter Sept. 2014)
What’s in a backpack? Bags are filled with approximately ten food items. Typical backpack bags contain a variety of child-friendly, easy-to-prepare food including protein, fruit and fruit juice, snacks, and milk. The cost per bag is $3.50, but there is no cost to the children or the school. The Backpack Program is not federally funded therefore we rely on donations from community and corporate sponsors, individuals, and grants. The Junior League of Lee County partnered with the Food Bank to launch and expand the program.
